Soil Sensors

Adroit deploys IoT solutions for real-time soil monitoring using ruggedly constructed, high-quality sensors perfectly suited to New Zealand’s often harsh outdoor environments.

Soil health is the foundation of productive farming and plant production (food) practices. A key facet of this production is the ability to monitor and manage soil quality. Issues such as usage, climate change, weather conditions, water supply, contaminants and pollution, all play a part in soil quality and its ability to produce healthy plants. Soil quality is used to describe soils that are not only fertile, but also possess adequate physical and biological properties to sustain productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant and animal health. Soil monitoring and control can increase soil quality, enabling it to hold more water and nutrients, increase yields, suppress pests and weeds, sequester carbon from the atmosphere, and clean the water that flows through it into rivers, lakes, and aquifers.

Adroit uses several IoT equipment suppliers (such as Dragino and Meter) to ensure we provide the best, purpose fit solution for your soil monitoring. Our Libelium smart soil monitoring kits utilise highly accurate and reliable sensors that also enable integration to third party equipment, such as irrigation controllers through RS232. Adroit can also deploy large quantities of cost-efficient wireless sensors across installations such as commercial planting installations, public gardens and farming applications..

Typical parameters soil sensors measure

  • Soil Temperature (Degrees)
  • Soil Moisture (cbar)
  • Electronic Conductivity (m3)
  • Volumetric Water Content (VWC) (dS/m)
  • Salinity
  • Total Suspended Solids (TTS)
  • Flow/Volume
  • Nitrate
Dragino Sensors

Based in Shenzhen China with strong telecommunication and engineering experience, Dragino has specialised in the design, development and manufacturing of IoT soil sensors since 2010. Dragino supplies ultra-reliable and cost-effective sensors to IoT solution providers worldwide. Adroit recommends and deploys Dragino equipment in applications that require high quantities of cost-effective sensors, such as LoraWAN soil moisture sensors. Dragino is an open-source hardware provider, with an aim to design solutions based on open IoT concepts. Adroit deploys the following off the shelf solution kits for use in many typical soil monitoring applications.

In 2016, the two firms of UMS and Decagon Devices merged to form Meter. They were brought together by strong common values, similar roots, a history of collaboration, and shared expertise in science and precision engineering. The unified company combines the strengths of both firms to create a competitive advantage in soil sensors through the Terros range of advanced soil sensors. Terros sensors are highly accurate, easy-to-deploy, and extremely durable while remaining economical. The sensors feature very low power consumption and a high resolution to provide increased precision over a longer period of time. Adroit recommends the use of Terros soil sensors when long-term, advanced soil sensor networks are required.
