As New Zealand faces a new era of fire risk, as demonstrated by major fires affecting Tongariro and recent outbreaks in Northland and Canterbury, the search for faster, smarter detection systems is becoming more critical.
German firm DRYAD Networks has provided an advanced solution to this need with an exciting new sensor system that has the potential to help emergency services reduce the impact of these damaging fire events.

Instead of relying on heat or flame, the sensors analyse changes in gases produced during the smouldering stage of combustion. These signals travel through a self-healing mesh network, reaching cloud-based analytics that verify the alert and notify responders.
The result is a system capable of identifying a fire long before it becomes visible, giving landowners, forestry managers, councils, and communities a critical head start.
