Identifying and understanding people and vehicle movements is an essential key for facilities management and planning. WiFi and Bluetooth scanning technologies can be used to create rich data sets that lead to valuable business insights. The scanners can be used to count people or estimate the size of a crowd at an event by scanning and recognizing individual bluetooth or WiFi enabled devices. The most common applications of crowd counting are in retail, leisure, travel routes, and urban or recreational environments. Vehicle counting works in a similar principle and can detect both the vehicle and the occupants of cars by the occupant’s phones, or the vehicle itself. This enables measuring of commute times to indicate possible congestion and transportation effectiveness.
The data capture from Libelium Mobile Scanners is rich, containing unique ID’s, timestamps, MAC source address, RSSI, SSID network data, and vendor information. It is transmitted via the IoT network to the Adroit IoT Platform, where the user can access a customisable dashboard, including alerts, from any web enabled device. With multiple devices positioned throughout a venue or route, the system can count the number of people, but also develop a picture of movement in an area, the visit duration, dwell times, and repeat visits. Data can also identify repeat visitors as opposed to new attendees. Each Libelium Mobile Scanner can collect phone and vehicle data for a radius of 50m-100m, making them ideal for entrance ways or travel routes, multiple scanners can be meshed to cover larger areas.
